Grade 11 Student: Jamie Coates
H20 swimmer and Gr 11 RIS student, Jamie Coates participated in the Autumn Cup International Swim Championships in Doha, Qatar over the weekend. This event hosted a total of 230 swimmers from 18 swim clubs from around the Middle East. Jamie swam a total of eight individual events winning gold medals in all of his events with six personal best times. He also swam in three relays, bringing home one silver and two bronze medals. Congratulations Jamie on a successful meet. A few weeks ago, Grade 9 student Aliosha Pittaka sat down with Jamie. He reports:
When I spoke with Jamie, he was just back from the FINA-Adidas World Swimming Championships in the Hamdan bin Rashid Stadium in Dubai. There, this 15-year-old swam the 200m and 100m backstroke and freestyle, finishing an impressive 18 out of 32 in open category (all ages). His favorite stroke, however, is butterfly.
Jamie is now in the DP and plans to be a professional athlete later on. He someday hopes to take part in the Olympics, and then continue to be involved in sports as a physiotherapist.
He was born in Australia and later moved to Qatar. He had been in Abu Dhabi for 3 years.
On a lighter note, if he had to pick a superpower, he would be invisible - evidently, he’d like to sneak around unnoticed. But if he makes it to the Olympics, that sure won’t go unnoticed.
I hope you join us in wishing Jamie all the best in his future endeavors. We hope he achieves his goal of the Olympics and that he remembers Raha when he does.
